WoW Classic splits professions into two main categories: gathering and crafting. Gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining, Skinning) pull raw materials from the world. You pick herbs from nodes, mine ore from veins, and skin the corpses of beasts you've killed. These materials fuel the economy and serve as the foundation for every crafted item in the game. Crafting professions (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring) take those raw materials and turn them into usable gear, consumables, and enhancements. Pairing a gathering profession with its matching crafting profession is the most common approach. Mining feeds Blacksmithing and Engineering, Herbalism feeds Alchemy, and Skinning feeds Leatherworking. Tailoring is the exception since it uses cloth dropped by humanoid mobs rather than a specific gathering skill. Enchanting also stands apart because it sources materials by disenchanting existing gear rather than gathering from the open world. Each recipe in a crafting profession is color-coded by difficulty: orange guarantees a skill point, yellow usually grants one, green rarely does, and grey gives nothing.

WoW Classic uses a four-tier proficiency system that gates your profession progress behind both skill thresholds and character levels. Apprentice is the starting rank, available at character level 5, and caps your skill at 75. Journeyman unlocks at level 10 once you reach 50 skill, raising the cap to 150. Expert requires level 20 and 125 skill, pushing the ceiling to 225. Artisan, the final rank, needs level 35 and 200 skill to unlock, allowing you to reach the 300 maximum. Each rank requires a visit to the appropriate profession trainer, and Artisan trainers for some professions are tucked away in less obvious locations across Azeroth. Beyond primary professions, every character can also learn all three secondary professions (Cooking, Fishing, First Aid) without any limit. Secondary professions follow a similar ranking structure but use books purchased from vendors for certain rank-ups instead of trainers. Racial bonuses also play a small role: Gnomes start with a +15 bonus to Engineering, and Tauren get +15 to Herbalism, giving those races a slight head start in their respective professions.
