Onyxia's Lair is the iconic level-60, 40-player raid hidden in the swamps of Dustwallow Marsh. In WoW Classic lore, Onyxia is the daughter of Deathwing and broodmother of the Black Dragonflight, who infiltrated Stormwind as Lady Katrana Prestor to manipulate the kingdom's politics. As one of the very first endgame encounters in vanilla WoW (alongside Molten Core), the Onyxia encounter has become legendary. This Onyxia's Lair guide covers her background and lore, and walks through how to prepare and defeat Onyxia in WoW Classic.

Location and Access
Onyxia's Lair is located in the Wyrmbog region of Dustwallow Marsh (Southern Eastern Kingdoms). The entrance is a cave behind a waterfall near Morgan's Vigil. Entry requires the Drakefire Amulet attunement quest. To begin this long faction-specific chain, players must first be level 60 and typically complete the "Warlord's Command" quest (from Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind or the Horde equivalent) to unlock the rest of the chain. The questline eventually leads to obtaining the Drakefire Amulet. In WoW Classic (before Cataclysm), this amulet was mandatory to enter Onyxia's Lair. Once attuned, a raid group can form at Dustwallow Marsh and make the trek in.
Raid Preparation
Since Onyxia's Lair is a level-60 raid, all players should be level 60 (the advised level) and properly geared. Tanks should wear high-threat gear (plus defense and block), healers should have enough mana and throughput, and DPS should have their best raid gear. Importantly, Fire Resistance gear and consumables are recommended – especially for Phase 2.
Assign roles in advance: a main tank (usually a Warrior or Protection Paladin), a second tank/off-tank for Whelps, at least two dedicated healers per group, and a balance of melee and ranged DPS. A threat meter is highly advised to avoid pulling aggro. In short, thorough WoW Classic raid preparation – full buffs, consumables, and Fire Resistance items – is crucial for success.
Fight Strategy
The Onyxia encounter has three phases. Phases 1 and 3 are fought on the ground, while Phase 2 is in the air. Proper positioning and teamwork in each phase are vital.

Phase 1 (100%–65%)
After pulling Onyxia to the far back wall, the raid should stack to her sides. The tank keeps Onyxia facing away from the raid (toward the wall). This avoids her Tail Sweep hitting melee (if hit, a player is knocked into nearby egg clusters and spawns extra Whelps). The tank must also stay close to the wall to absorb Onyxia's Wing Buffet knockback. Onyxia's frontal Flame Breath will hit anyone in front of her, so melee should stay to her sides. Melee DPS focus Onyxia, but beware her Knock Away (which drops the tank's threat). Note that Onyxia cannot be taunted, so the tank must hold aggro by building threat. DPS down Onyxia to 65%, avoiding her tail and knockback mechanics.
Phase 2 (65%–40%)
At 65%, Onyxia flies to the center and engages Phase 2. Melee can't reach her while flying, so ranged DPS (mages, hunters, warlocks) burn Onyxia from a distance. Meanwhile, Onyxian Whelps begin spawning continuously from the egg clusters. Assign groups on each side of the room to handle the Whelps, each with a dedicated healer. Melee DPS and off-tanks should pick up and kill these adds; ranged DPS can help if needed.
Onyxia will periodically sweep a powerful flame breath across the room. This "deep breath" hits everyone caught in its path for massive Fire damage, so all players must quickly move to the sides to dodge. Spreading out minimizes splash damage. Ranged DPS should use cooldowns here to burn Phase 2 down as fast as possible. Once Onyxia reaches 40%, Phase 2 ends.
Phase 3 (40%–0%)
Onyxia lands again for Phase 3. Treat her landing like a fresh pull: the raid should reposition just as in Phase 1 (tank at wall, raid stacked to the sides). One key difference is that she will now periodically use Bellowing Roar, which fears the entire raid, then cause the cracks in the floor to erupt for Fire damage. Also, Whelps will continue to join the fight even without egg triggers.
After she lands, tanks should immediately rebuild threat (it resets on landing) and resume holding Onyxia at the wall. Priest/Shaman must be ready to remove the Fear from the tank in Phase 3 – if the tank runs into the raid under fear, Onyxia's next Flame Breath can wipe the group. Continue burning Onyxia; kill off any remaining Whelps.
Tank Positioning
The main tank must always face Onyxia away from the raid. In ground phases, tank her at the back wall so that her tail (and Wing Buffet) won't knock players into the room. When Onyxia flies (Phase 2), off-tanks should grab Whelps. After the landing (Phase 3), the main tank drags Onyxia back to the wall and re-groups the raid, as threat has reset.
DPS Roles
DPS must adapt by phase. In Phases 1 and 3, all DPS focus Onyxia (aside from cleaving any incidental adds). In Phase 2, ranged DPS burn the boss while melee DPS (and any extra ranged if needed) handle the Whelps. It's often optimal for ranged DPS to save major cooldowns for Phase 2 to shorten that phase. After Phase 2 ends, pause DPS briefly to let the tank re-establish threat on Onyxia, since threat resets on landing.
Use area-of-effect and crowd-control tools (Freeze trap, Blizzard, Mass Dispel, etc.) to help clear Whelps quickly. Spread out during Phase 2 flame breaths and Phase 3 eruptions to avoid overlapping fire damage. A threat meter is recommended so DPS don't accidently overtake the tank.
Healer Responsibilities
Healers should be prepared for heavy raid-wide damage. In Phase 1, keep the tank topped up through her flame and Tail Sweeps. In Phase 2, heal up melee groups taking add cleave and the raid when Onyxia's flame hits someone. Be especially ready for damage from Phase 2's continuous fire and Phase 3's eruptions.
After fear breaks, heal the group quickly so the raid survives the ensuing damage. Carry extra mana/health potions for all healers.
Whelp Management
Onyxia's fight spawns many adds (Onyxian Whelps). In Phase 2, eggs around the room will hatch waves of whelps. Assign two "add groups" (left and right) with dedicated healers to handle Whelps. Typically melee players or off-tanks pick up the whelps each wave; ranged players help if needed. Use crowd-control (Frost Nova, Concussion Shot, etc.) and nuke to kill them quickly.
In Phase 3, Whelps will continue to join the battle even without being spawned by players. Designate kill teams for these as well – melee were usually assigned in Phase 2, but in Phase 3 ranged can quickly switch to adds once Onyxia is being tanked. Effective add control prevents being overwhelmed.
Onyxia's Deep Breath (Fire Breath)
A major mechanic to watch is Onyxia's powerful Fire Breath (often called her "Deep Breath"). In Phase 2, she will sweep a constant fire cone across the entire room. All players must dodge to the sides immediately when this cast begins. Being caught in the middle means catastrophic damage. Using Fire Resistance potions preemptively helps healers and casters survive stragglers, but avoidance is key.

Tips and Tricks
By avoiding these common mistakes and following the phase strategies above, your raid can achieve a smooth kill.
Conclusion
Onyxia's Lair remains one of the most iconic raid encounters in WoW Classic Raids. Facing the black dragon broodmother ties together Warcraft lore (Onyxia as Deathwing's daughter) with classic gameplay. It was one of only two raids available at launch of vanilla WoW, and the challenge of obtaining all Tier 2 armor and quest rewards made it a rite of passage. Even today, a solid Onyxia strategy is a badge of honor for classic raiders.
By preparing well (proper raid prep) and mastering each fight phase (Phase 1–3) and Deep Breath mechanic, guilds can clear this legendary 40-man boss. In short, Onyxia's Lair exemplifies why WoW Classic raids are still celebrated – it's challenging, lore-rich, and rewarding, marking an epic culmination for classic-era raiders.
Hunters should save Feign Death for emergency threat dumps during transitions. The Mature Black Dragon Sinew drop is essential for your Rhok'delar legendary bow quest!
Mages should save Ice Block for when you accidentally pull aggro or need to clear a fear. Your Blizzard spell is excellent for handling large groups of whelps!
Warriors tanking Onyxia should maximize threat gear and regularly use Bloodrage to maintain rage generation. Have Greater Stoneshield Potions ready for Phase 3 when damage spikes!
