Blizzard reopened Challenge Mode dungeons in Mists of Pandaria Classic on July 29th following a week-long shutdown caused by major bugs. The company wiped all Challenge Mode achievements and manually awarded legitimate Realm First titles to fix the competitive mess.
Bugs Broke the Achievement System at Launch
Challenge Mode dungeons went live with MoP Classic but immediately hit serious problems. Players got all three medal types - Gold, Silver, and Bronze - regardless of their completion times. Everyone who ran a Challenge Mode dungeon walked away with achievements they didn't earn.
The bug only affected a small number of players, but the impact was huge. These achievements unlock exclusive rewards and affect realm-wide competition for first clears.
A second bug blocked progress entirely. Players couldn't get credit for completing Heroic Temple of the Jade Serpent, which prevented access to that dungeon's Challenge Mode version. Groups got stuck at 8/9 completion with no way forward.

Blizzard shut down Challenge Modes within hours once they spotted the issues.
Blizzard Reset Everything and Rebuilt from Scratch
The fix required manual intervention on a massive scale. Blizzard identified every player who got incorrect achievements and removed them during maintenance. Those players logged in to find their Challenge Mode progress completely wiped.
Blizzard also tracked down players who legitimately earned Realm First! Challenge Conqueror Gold! achievements before the shutdown. Those players got their titles back before dungeons reopened.
Determining legitimate Realm Firsts wasn't simple. Blizzard analyzed completion times, how quickly players earned achievements, their progress when dungeons went offline, and their lead over competing teams. When groups had extremely close times, multiple teams got Realm First status rather than picking a single winner.
All achievement changes happened during scheduled maintenance to avoid more disruption.
Dungeons Reopened on Different Schedules
Challenge Modes came back online at different times across regions. Some areas got access at 3:00 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, July 29th. Others had to wait for weekly maintenance that started at 03:00 CEST on July 30th.
The Temple of the Jade Serpent bug got fixed in the process. Players who couldn't access that Challenge Mode before can now run all nine dungeons without issues.

Why Blizzard Chose Fairness Over Uptime
The shutdown and reset showed Blizzard prioritizing competitive integrity over keeping content available. Incorrect achievements didn't just affect individual players. The bug warped entire realm competitions and gave some people unearned rewards.
By manually awarding Realm Firsts to multiple groups in close races, Blizzard acknowledged that recreating perfect competition after technical failures isn't always possible. The approach favored inclusive recognition when the bugs made determining clear winners difficult.
Challenge Modes Work Properly Now
Players can access all nine Challenge Mode dungeons with the bugs fixed. The achievement system awards medals based on actual completion times instead of handing them out automatically.
Realm First competitions are back on equal footing. Players don't have to worry about technical advantages or disadvantages from the earlier problems.
Blizzard thanked the community for patience during the fix and praised player passion for Challenge Mode content. The response set a precedent for handling competitive gaming issues when system failures compromise fairness over keeping everything running.
