Why Beast Mastery?
Beast Mastery is arguably the strongest Hunter spec for leveling in The Burning Crusade Classic. All three Hunter specs can reach level 70 without much trouble, but BM offers advantages that make the grind smoother and more efficient.
The spec works well in pretty much every leveling scenario. Solo questing, dungeon grinding with groups, or mixing both approaches all play to BM's strengths. One of the spec's defining features is its ability to solo certain Elite mobs that would normally require a group, which saves you a lot of time waiting for help or skipping quests entirely.
Three talents define the Beast Mastery playstyle: Intimidation gives your pet an on-demand stun for emergencies and pull control, Bestial Wrath unleashes massive burst damage, and The Beast Within grants you personal damage reduction plus immunity to crowd control during those burst windows. Together, these create a self-sufficient killing machine that handles most content without breaking a sweat.

The Standard 41/20/0 Build
The talent setup you'll use for leveling is the same build that works in endgame raiding: 41 points in Beast Mastery and 20 points in Marksmanship, with nothing in Survival. This maximizes your pet's damage contribution while grabbing key personal damage talents from Marksmanship.

Talent Progression: Level 60 to 70
When you hit Outland at 60, your Beast Mastery tree should already be maxed at 41 points. You should have 10 points in Marksmanship: 5/5 Lethal Shots and 5/5 Efficiency.
- Level 61: Grab Aimed Shot. You won't use it much during leveling, but it unlocks Mortal Shots further down the tree.
- Levels 62-63: Put both points into Rapid Killing (2/2). The bonus damage after kills happens constantly while leveling.
- Levels 64-65: Fill out Go for the Throat (2/2). Your ranged crits now generate Focus for your pet.
- Levels 66-70: Finish with Mortal Shots (5/5). Each point adds 6% to your crit damage bonus, totaling 30% when fully talented.
Leveling Through Azeroth (Levels 1-60)
During your climb through the original continents, rush down the Beast Mastery tree to unlock The Beast Within as fast as possible. This talent speeds up your kills and cuts downtime between pulls significantly.
Ability Training: What to Learn
Knowing which abilities to train (and which to ignore) saves you a lot of gold. Not every rank matters, and smart choices about training leave more money for mounts, gear, and other expenses.

- Level 61, Explosive Trap (Rank 4): Places a trap that explodes for fire damage when triggered. Handy for pulling and AoE.
- Level 62, Disengage (Rank 4): Reduces your threat. Useful in dungeons when you pull aggro.
- Level 65, Immolation Trap (Rank 6): Places a trap dealing fire damage over time. Situationally useful for extra single-target damage.
- Level 66, Viper Sting (Rank 4): Drains mana from the target. Mostly a PvP ability.
- Level 67, Serpent Sting (Rank 10): Nature damage over time. Worth applying during longer fights.
- Level 68, Snake Trap: Releases snakes that attack nearby enemies. Adds minor CC and distraction.
Combat Rotation
Before Level 62: The Slow Phase
Until you learn Steady Shot at 62, your rotation feels sluggish and repetitive. This mirrors pre-patch raiding gameplay, and there's no way around it. Your damage abilities are limited to Multi-Shot and Arcane Shot, both on cooldowns that leave gaps with nothing to press.
Basic Pre-62 Rotation:
- Start every fight with Auto Shot. This is your main damage source during this phase.
- Fire Arcane Shot right after your first Auto Shot lands.
- Use Multi-Shot whenever it's off cooldown. Watch your surroundings though, and avoid using it when it might break CC on nearby mobs.
- Fill the remaining time with Auto Shots while waiting for cooldowns.
Level 62 Onward: The Real Rotation
Once you pick up Steady Shot, your rotation finally has structure. The core principle stays the same: never interrupt (or "clip") your Auto Shot with other abilities.
Rotation Fundamentals:
- Auto Shot first: Every sequence begins with Auto Shot, time other abilities between Auto Shots.
- Arcane Shot follows Auto Shot: Right after an Auto Shot, fire Arcane Shot.
- Multi-Shot on cooldown: Keep using Multi-Shot when it's up, but stay aware of CC.
- Steady Shot fills the gaps: When other abilities are on cooldown, cast Steady Shot between Auto Shots.
- Kill Command on cooldown (Level 66+): Hit it immediately when available and your pet is attacking.
Advanced: Raptor Strike Weaving
Players looking to squeeze out maximum damage can still weave Raptor Strike at 62+. The timing gets trickier with more abilities to track, but skilled players can fill rotation gaps by stepping into melee for Raptor Strike before returning to range. The damage gains are marginal, and pulling it off without messing up your Auto Shot timing takes real practice.
Weapon Progression
Your ranged weapon matters more than any other gear slot. Weapon upgrades provide the biggest damage jumps you'll see from any single piece of equipment.
If You Raided Naxxramas
Players who grabbed Nerubian Slavemaker or Soulstring from Naxxramas during Classic can use these weapons through the entire leveling process to 70. Both remain strong enough for your first Karazhan runs while you work toward pre-raid BiS.

Pet Selection and Management
Your pet accounts for a huge chunk of your damage as a BM Hunter. Picking the right pet and keeping it alive directly affects how fast you level.
Choosing Your Pet
For Min-Maxers: There's a technique to prepare the ideal leveling pet before hitting Outland. During pre-patch, tame a Plagued Swine to teach your pet Gore. After learning the ability, head to Azuremyst Isle and tame a Ravager Specimen. This prep work eliminates the need to detour during Outland leveling to grab a ravager.
For Solo Questors: If you're leveling through questing rather than dungeon grinding, skip the pre-patch prep. Tame a ravager in Hellfire Peninsula or Blade's Edge Mountains once you get to Outland. The recommended approach is keeping your current pet until 63, then taming a Rip-Blade Ravager to learn Gore at max TBC rank.
For Most Players (Recommended for Beginners): Owls make great leveling companions thanks to their Screech ability. Screech generates significant threat (keeping enemies on your pet instead of you) while applying an effect equivalent to Demoralizing Shout, which reduces enemy attack power. High threat plus damage reduction means your pet survives longer between Mend Pet casts.
Keeping Your Pet Alive
Mend Pet changed significantly in TBC. It's now instant cast instead of channeled, so you can maintain damage while healing your pet. Keep an eye on your pet's health and cast Mend Pet when it drops to around 50% or lower. Don't wait until your pet is nearly dead since the heal-over-time effect needs time to work.
Questing vs. Dungeon Grinding
BM Hunters handle both major leveling paths well. Your choice comes down to personal preference, available playtime, and whether you have reliable group members.
Solo Questing
Questing offers a self-directed experience where you control the pace. You can log in and out freely without coordinating with anyone. BM's ability to solo elite mobs means you can complete group quests alone in many cases, and the combination of pet tanking with ranged damage keeps you safe during normal encounters.
Professions for Solo Players: Grab Skinning plus either Herbalism or Mining. Skinning gives you leather that Leatherworkers need for pre-raid BiS gear and leg enchants. These materials sell well early in the expansion as players gear up for raiding.
Dungeon Grinding
Running dungeons repeatedly from 60-70 offers faster XP rates when done efficiently with a coordinated group. BM Hunters bring strong single-target damage plus utility through Misdirection (at 70) and CC via traps and Intimidation.
Professions for Dungeon Grinders: Professions matter less when you're dungeon grinding since you spend minimal time in the open world. The one exception is Enchanting. If nobody else in your group has it, picking up Enchanting lets you disenchant unwanted gear drops into valuable crafting mats instead of vendoring them.
Consumables for Fast Leveling
Most players won't pop consumables constantly throughout leveling. But for those pushing maximum efficiency, especially dungeon grinders racing to 70, these provide real advantages:
- Elixir of the Mongoose (Battle Elixir): Boosts your Agility and crit chance. This is the main offensive elixir for Hunters who want every possible damage edge.
- Mageblood Potion (Guardian Elixir): Increases your mana regen. Using this extends the time between mana breaks and keeps your rotation running smoothly.
- Major Mana Potion: Instant mana recovery. When you can't afford downtime and your mana bar empties, these keep you fighting.
