The wait is over for Guardians everywhere. Destiny 2: Renegades officially launched on December 2, 2025, bringing with it Update 9.5.0 (appearing as version 1.177/3.82 on consoles). This Star Wars-inspired expansion, developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, marks the second major release in the Year of Prophecy and kicks off Season: Lawless, which will provide content for the next six months.

Following a period of lower-than-expected player engagement after The Edge of Fate expansion, Bungie has positioned Renegades as a potential turning point for the game. The update delivers sweeping sandbox changes, significant quality-of-life improvements, and introduces entirely new gameplay systems alongside the expansion's fresh content.

Renegades Campaign and Story

The Renegades campaign picks up after the events of The Edge of Fate. The mysterious entities known as The Nine have begun executing their plans for humanity, which involve a new Cabal faction called the Barant Imperium. A mysterious figure calling himself Dredgen Bael leads the charge, and players must rise to meet this new threat.

Pro Tip
One notable change from previous expansions is that the Praxic Blade exotic sword will be earned during the campaign itself rather than through a separate exotic mission after completion. However, Bungie has confirmed that obtaining this weapon still involves a full exotic mission experience complete with puzzles, integrated into the campaign's progression.

The campaign offers both normal and legendary difficulty options, with legendary completions traditionally rewarding an exotic armor piece.

Lawless Frontier Activity

The Lawless Frontier represents Renegades' flagship replayable activity, designed around scalability and long-term engagement. Players build reputation through a new Notoriety system by completing missions commissioned by three distinct Syndicate factions:

The Pikers are an anarchist and atheist biker gang composed of Eliksni who seek to build a society free from traditional ranks and hierarchy.

Tharsis Reformation is a breakaway sect of sentient Vex driven by a desire to experience personal identity outside the Vex collective mind.

Totality Division operates as a rogue branch of the Barant Imperium Cabal, functioning as a Syndicate on Mars and ruled by psions.

Mission types available through Lawless Frontier include Smuggling runs, Bounty Hunts, and Sabotage operations. These missions span expanded areas across Mars, Europa, and Venus and can be completed solo or with a three-person fireteam.

Note
The activity introduces an Invasion mode that allows one Guardian to join an opposing team mid-mission, creating disruption opportunities and offering special rewards for successful invaders. Players can also earn and upgrade new Renegades Abilities that provide fresh combat tools specifically within Lawless Frontier activities.

Blasters: A New Weapon Type

Renegades introduces Blasters as an entirely new weapon category. Unlike traditional Destiny 2 weapons, Blasters utilize a heat-based ammo system instead of conventional magazines, requiring players to manage heat buildup rather than reload times.

The expansion adds several new exotic weapons to the game:

  • Praxic Blade - A kinetic sword inspired by lightsabers that allows players to customize both its appearance and playstyle

Exotic Weapons & Armor Boost

Equilibrium Dungeon

The new Equilibrium dungeon arrives on December 13, 2025, available to all players who purchase Renegades or the Destiny 2: Year of Prophecy edition. The dungeon features unique rewards and weapons for successful completions.

A Contest Mode Dungeon Race will accompany the launch, with the official stream featuring Evanf1997 and CBGray beginning at 6 AM PT for the pre-show and 9 AM PT for the race start. Once a fireteam clears Contest Mode, the normal variant will also become available to all players.

Pro Tip
Viewers can earn the Paranoia Pink emblem through Twitch Drops by watching official Twitch channels for 30 minutes. CBGray will also distribute the same emblem to YouTube viewers.

Orders System

The Orders system represents a fundamental change to how players engage with objectives in Destiny 2. This new system replaces both bounties and Seasonal Challenges with what Bungie describes as a more approachable set of objectives that reward players consistently for their time.

Critical Note
Key features of the Orders system include: Orders can drop with Common, Legendary, and even Exotic rarities. Rewards are granted automatically upon completion without requiring players to visit an NPC. The system adapts to your playstyle dynamically.

Orders appear in the Nav Mode tracker where bounties previously displayed. Lapsed players receive a buff to their Order completions to help them catch up. Players can earn Bright Dust through completing Orders.

Orders are accessed through the Seasonal Hub, which has received updated features and layouts with this expansion.

Vanguard Alerts

Vanguard Alerts is a new feature designed to reignite the Destiny 2 weekly ritual experience. The system provides a range of activities available to players at all skill levels through different playlists, including a Grandmaster Vanguard Alert option and raid and dungeon challenges.

The stated goal is to recreate the feeling of logging into Destiny 2 for the week and immediately knowing which activities to tackle for optimal rewards, providing opportunities to have fun while building toward harder content.

Vanguard Alerts will become available starting in week two of Renegades. To access the list of active Alerts each week, players must open the Portal, select the Season Hub tab, and navigate to the Vanguard Alerts menu.

Quality of Life Improvements

Vault Expansion

One of the most requested features has finally arrived. The vault now holds 300 additional slots, increasing the maximum capacity to 1,000 items. Alongside this expansion, Bungie has revamped the vault filtering system, allowing players to sort by gear tier, weapon types, power levels, and other criteria without scrolling through multiple pages.

Universal Exotic Armor Ornaments

Players can now apply any owned Exotic Armor Ornament to any other Exotic of the same class and slot in PvE activities. This means a Hunter helmet ornament can be applied to a different Hunter exotic helmet, for example. To prevent combat confusion, armors will continue to display their base aesthetic in PvP activities.

Power and Progression Changes

  • Seasonal Power (Power above 200) no longer resets with new seasons - players maintain their current Power level when Renegades launches
  • Unstable Cores have been removed entirely
  • Infusion continues to use Enhancement Cores and Glimmer
  • New rewards now drop at 300 Power or higher, ensuring all players catch up with the Techsec Supply Drop reward levels even if they missed claiming it when available
  • All Exotics now count as New Gear, providing 5% bonus weapon damage and up to 10% incoming damage reduction (2% per equipped armor piece)

Returning Player Benefits

Returning players receive powerful rewards and XP buffs to accelerate their catch-up progression, with additional benefits extending to friends they play with.

Seasonal Events and Twitch Drops

The Dawning

The Dawning winter event begins December 16, 2025, featuring new wolf-themed armor cosmetics and limited-time weapons.

Between December 2 at 9 AM PT and December 12 at 9 AM PT, players can earn rewards by watching eligible Destiny 2: Renegades streams:

Renegades marks a new chapter in Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy

Looking Ahead

The Edge of Fate content remains relevant within Year of Prophecy after Renegades launches. Players can continue farming Kepler loot through weekly featured missions and general farming up to tier five. All raids and dungeons remain fully farmable for both legendary and exotic loot without a featured weekly rotation.

The first major content milestone following launch arrives on December 13 with the Equilibrium dungeon. The Dawning follows shortly after on December 16, and Trials of Osiris returns on December 19. Bungie has indicated they will share ongoing plans through a roadmap in 2026.

Note
Update 9.5.0.1 is scheduled for the week after launch, which will include the Sentinel Shield auto-reload feature that was delayed due to a late-discovered issue. Players can expect continued bug fixes and adjustments as the development team monitors the expansion's launch.
