Diablo 4's rune system pairs two socketable items to create Runewords. A Rune of Ritual goes in the top socket and generates Offering whenever you meet its condition (casting skills, moving a set distance, using a Potion, and others). A Rune of Invocation sits in the bottom socket and spends that Offering to activate its effect once the threshold is reached. Effects range from cross-class abilities to flat damage bonuses and defensive buffs.

If your Ritual Rune generates more Offering than the Invocation requires, the Overflow mechanic kicks in, temporarily boosting the effect's power based on the excess. You can equip two Runewords at once across Helm, Chest, Legs, or two-handed weapon slots, and no Rune can appear twice in your loadout.

D4 Runes come in three rarity tiers: Magic, Rare, and Legendary. Higher rarity means stronger effects and more Offering generated per trigger. Magic Runes drop frequently and work well early on, Rare Runes show up more in higher World Tiers, and Legendary Runes are the real prize.
