Diablo 4 Overview - Release Date
Unfortunately, Diablo 4 will not be released anytime soon. The game director confirmed that it is not expected to be ready soon, even by Blizzard’s standards. Since the game is being developed for Xbox One and PS4 it is possible that it will get a release in the next two or three years /since the lifespan of these consoles will soon come to an end/.
Trailers
Since Blizzcon 2019 we have seen quite a lot of Diablo 4’s gameplay. The footage reveals that the game will return to its Gothic roots and the addictive gameplay that we are all so familiar with. Of course, given the game may not come out soon, the footage can change in the future. However, it is still exciting to check out a glimpse of what Diablo 4 has to offer and the direction it is headed.
News, Features And Leaks
In 2019 Blizzard shared their intentions of constantly updating us on the status of Diablo 4 all through 2020. In a lengthy response, the Community Manager stated that the game is still very early in development, so they do not have much new information to share yet.
Moreover, the Diablo team is working on more than one project, and sharing updates in scheduled steps is necessary.
We are almost certainly getting an update on Diablo 4 in the first quarter of 2020. Part of what makes the updates happen slower is that the team wants to make sure that what players get will be of the highest possible standard.
At the end of the announcement, Blizzard promised that more cool stuff is in the works. They want to perfect the game, keep transparent communication with the fans, but at the same time to not give unreasonable promises. They don’t want to reveal too much content too soon.
Ancient Legendaries
The lead system designer of Diablo 4 has made a statement concerning the system of the newest Diablo game. The game was revealed not to have Ancient Legendaries, but there will be new stats. Since they want to make the game more rewarding for the players, Ancient Legendaries will be replaced with the ability to apply legendary features to non-legendary items.
The item affixes are going to increase, which will naturally increase the value of non-legendary affixes. There will also be 3 new stats – Ancestral, Demonic, and Angelic power – which will appear as affixes.
As a result of that, new legendary powers will not lessen the strength of the affixes, and the affixes, on their side, will provide more interesting choices, because their strength is going to depend on the accumulated powers of the rest of your gear.
For example, you may find an amulet with perfect stats for you, but some of its stats might need demonic power, even your previous focus was ancestral. If your amulet is the source of your ancestral power, then equipping a new one would mean that you need to make sacrifices somewhere else.
This new system will let you easily identify the items with nice stats but you will have to put in some more thought on whether you actually need those items for your build.
The Attack and Defense have also been through a change. In Diablo 4, the attack will only be associated with weapons and defense – with armor. Jewelry will not be associated with either.
Story & Map
The game and the art directors explained a little bit more about their ambitions for Diablo 4 and its expansions.
The information that we already have is that the main villain of the game will be Lilith. In the expansions, we are promised to see some more characters and stories.
The art director said that the fourth installment of the game is going to be like the first chapter of a novel. The team wants to tell us a huge story, hopefully for a long period of time.
The world of Sanctuary is going to include 5 regions. Players will be able to travel all the way from the most Northern point, down to the Dry Steppes and deserts of Kejhistan. The transition will be completely seamless and we are promised to never see a loading screen.
Updates
Game director Luis Barriba promises fans that they can expect a cool update on Diablo 4 in February 2020. This update is supposed to be one of many “quarterly” updates, which will arrive this year.
He also promises that the “stats and items” discussion is on the table and they are trying their best. He also claims that the studio has read most of the players’ concerns about the game. It is said that in the upcoming weeks, lead system designer David Kim will clarify the subject and answer some of the most pending questions.
Microtransactions
The lead designer of Diablo 4 Joe Shely says that the game will most likely have microtransactions but they will be of cosmetic purposes and there will also be expansions in addition to the base game. He added that the game is still in its early stages of development so things might change in the future.
Blizzcon 2019
Diablo 4 was officially announced on Nov 1 at Blizzcon 2019. There was also revealed that the game will focus on the daughter of Mephisto – Lilith. Diablo 4 will be an isometric action RPG, just like its predecessors. It will have some PvP zones in the overworld and the first three announced classes are Druid, Sorceress, and Barbarian. Diablo 4 will be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Events And Setting
Diablo 4 will be set right after Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls. After Malthael, the Angel of Death destroyed a big portion of Sanctuary, the gates of heaven have been closed shut. It is during that time of Heaven’s chaos and ignorance about the events, that Lilith – the canonical mother of humanity is set free from her prison.
The overworld is wide open, with 5 regions, unique in their own way, along with an everchanging day/night cycles and weather. The missions are promised to be non-linear and players will be free to take them on however they like.
Online Status
In Diablo 4, the other players are going to appear in-game for shared events. This means that you will always have to be online, in order to play. You won’t be able to turn that feature off but you can always choose not to play in a group. There are still to be announced more details about the feature.
Skills & Talent Trees
There is information that the rune system has been replaced with a system of spending points on certain skills, in order to improve them /some of them will gain new effects when you are on a higher level. Additionally, each of the classes will have a talent tree, which allows players to further customize their build. Equipment and weapons can also be enhanced using the new socketing system, called “Rune Word”.
Dungeons & Loot
Just like the previous games, Diablo 4 promises you to spend a huge portion of your playtime in dungeons. They are going to be randomly generated and will provide players with some unique legendary items to loot and equip.
Abilities
Each of the five classes will have 5 abilities, including Ultimate attack and Evade.
Classes
At its launch, Diablo 4 will feature 5 classes, three of which have already been announced.
The Barbarian is going to return to Diablo 4 and will be able to wield both single- and double-handed weapons. He will have 4 weapon slots.
