Valorant and its Unique and Innovative Ranking System
Riot’s new title Valorant was released in early June, unleashing a powerful and exciting new multiplayer first-person action video game to the market. With the mass popularity it has quickly gained in both casual play and professional streaming, it’s likely we’re only seeing the beginning of the rise of this unique title in the gaming marketplace.
One of the coolest things about it that sets it apart from its competition is its innovative and unique ranking system. This system allows players to get even more of the Competitive Mode than other titles in similar genres. And with more and more DLCs slated for release, we’re sure to see even more ways that this system unlocks opportunities for all sorts of players!

First Things First: Unlocking Valorant’s Competitive Mode
The very first thing to do, in order to take advantage of the ranking system, is to unlock its Competitive Mode. In order to do this, you’ll need to complete 20 Unrated matches within the Unrated Mode.
The purpose of these matches is to get you used to the unique gameplay and make sure you’re fully prepared for the fast-paced and exciting Competitive Mode. This is especially important since your early advancements up the ladder are mostly tied to your performance, so you’ll want to get as skilled as possible to move within the ranks.
Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter how well you do during these first 20 matches, but they’ll give you an opportunity to get comfortable with the mechanics, try out different agents, and try out brand-new tactics.
Once you’ve completed these 20 matches, get ready! You’re about to begin your ranked journey in Competitive Mode.

Ranking in Competitive Mode
Valorants new rank system has 8 ranks. Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Immortal, and Radiant. Except for the highest ranks, Immortal and Radiant, all other ranks will have 3 levels within. To move up the levels in each rank, you will need 100 RR. This new Ranked Rating, or RR for short, will let you know exactly where you are on the ladder. You can track your progression at all times and know exactly what rank and level you are. At the end of every game, you will win RR for a win and lose RR for a loss. Every win will award you between 10 and 50 RR depending on how good your in-game performance was. Diamond and higher wins may give you a minimum of 5 RR. If you lose a game you will lose between 0 and 30 RR, and in Diamond and higher you can lose a maximum of 50 RR. In the case of a Draw, you can gain a maximum of 20 RR but only till Diamond rank. If you are on 0 RR and leave a game, you will be demoted. However, if you are demoted, you will not go below 80 RR at the previous rank. But in any case, the way you perform in every game determines the amount of RR points that you will win or lose.
The Immortal rank now has only one level. The moment you reach it, you will be listed on the best Valorant players ladder. If you consistently perform well, you can get in the top 500. Then you will be the highest rank in the game, Radiant. However, you need to play at least 50 ranked games to reach Radiant, and you will need to play at least one game a weak to keep your place on the ladder. Keep in mind that your rank will become invisible if you go 14 or more days without playing any competitive matches. You won’t fall in rank, however. It stays hidden again until you play through another Competitive match except when you are placed on the ladder as mentioned above. That way you’ll be able to take a break from gameplay without having to worry about losing your rank.
Competitive Matchmaking
It is still too early to say how the new ranking system will work with the player's MMR. In Competitive matches, it is expected that players will pair you up with opponents that are higher or lower in rank than you by a margin of only two ranks. This gives you an opportunity to not only dominate those who are lagging a bit behind you, but also the ability to battle those who are just above you. You will never be outnumbered, as the in-game AI factors in how many people are in your particular party, when you are matched with opponents.
Penalties for dodging
When it comes to people that leave the games, they will receive penalties. If someone from your team quits during the match, you will be less affected by the match outcome if you stay to the end of the game. This means that you can lose less RR at the end of the match. The other new thing is penalties for dodging in character selection. Riot wants to issue some MMR penalty, for character select dodging whether they are dodging the map or because the player's main character got picked.

How to Increase Your Valorant Ranking
The biggest question now Competitive mode gamers will have: how do I increase my competitive rating? The answer depends on several factors.
For one, the system takes into account how exactly you win your matches. For example, if you absolutely crush your opponents you will have a great likelihood of leveling up after a match. If you just barely scrape by or win practically by accident, it’ll also figure into your odds of increasing in rank. This additional nuance makes the system far more sophisticated than its market competitors.
As you’ll see later on, however, the biggest factor of your early rank advancements will be your overall performance. You’ll want to make sure you win as many matches as possible, of course, and do so in the most dominant way possible. But your early performance should be your focus.
The best general advice for climbing the ranks is to perform as well as possible – don’t merely try to win the matches, but dominate your enemies and be creative in your methods. As mentioned above, the system takes this into account as you move through the ranks.
Ranking Strategies as Your Rank Increases
Your strategy will shaft as you progress through the ranks. The earlier tiers heavily focus on your performance. As your performance gets better and better, you’ll be more likely to advance and climb another tier. Once you’ve moved through the ranks, this becomes less important. At the highest tiers, it literally doesn’t factor in any way.
At the very highest levels, the only things that matter are 1) whether your team won, and 2) the method in which you won. If you get that far in Competitive Play, you’ll have already proven your performance is excellent!
