Marathon splits its contract system into three tiers that each serve a different purpose. Standard contracts are repeatable missions with basic objectives like hacking a terminal, eliminating specific enemies, or collecting resources from a zone. They provide steady faction reputation and are the everyday grind for any Runner working through an upgrade tree. Boosted contracts layer tighter requirements on top of similar goals, but the reputation and loot rewards jump noticeably. These work best for players confident they can finish a run without dying, since the added conditions leave less room for mistakes during extraction. Priority contracts sit in their own category entirely. These are one-time missions directly tied to a faction's storyline, and completing them is the only way to push your Faction Rank past certain thresholds. Skip them and you'll eventually hit a wall where no amount of Standard contract completions will move the needle. One shared rule across all contract types: you can only carry one active contract per run, and every objective must be completed in a single extraction.

Grinding contracts feeds two separate systems in Marathon, and it helps to know which is which. Faction reputation raises your rank with each of the six corporations: CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, Arachne, and Sekiguchi Genetics. Higher rank unlocks access to that faction's Armory, where you spend credits on the gear, weapons, and implants they stock. Rank doesn't grant stat boosts on its own, so reputation is really about what you're able to buy rather than how strong your Runner becomes. The stats themselves come from the Cradle. You feed unneeded loot into the Matter Converter, which turns weapons, equipment, and other items into Cradle XP. Leveling the Cradle earns Energy, and you spend that Energy across shared stat categories on your Runner Shell. Hit certain breakpoints and you unlock extra perks. Stat progress carries across every Shell you own, and you can reset and reallocate points at any time with no penalty, so testing out different builds costs you nothing. All of it wipes on the seasonal reset. Faction ranks, Armory access, and Cradle progress clear at the start of each season, so the contract grind starts from scratch every time. Falling behind early still snowballs once other Runners have their stats and gear sorted while you're climbing back up from the bottom.
