Marathon splits its contract system into three tiers that each serve a different purpose. Standard contracts are repeatable missions with basic objectives like hacking a terminal, eliminating specific enemies, or collecting resources from a zone. Priority contracts sit in their own category entirely. These are one-time missions directly tied to a faction's storyline, and completing them is the only way to push your Faction Rank past certain thresholds. Skip them and you'll eventually hit a wall where no amount of Standard contract completions will move the needle. One shared rule across all contract types: you can only carry one active contract per run, and every objective must be completed in a single extraction.

The real payoff for grinding contracts isn't the loot you extract with, it's the seasonal upgrades each faction sells once you reach higher ranks. CyberAcme unlocks expanded vault space and heat management perks that let you sprint and use abilities longer. NuCaloric focuses on shield upgrades and survivability, giving Runners access to better shield implants and faster healing. Traxus offers loot detection tools, black-market gear access, and economic advantages that compound across multiple runs. MIDA specializes in speed and reconnaissance bonuses for aggressive playstyles, while Arachne rewards PvP-focused players with damage boosts and combat uptime. Sekiguchi Genetics rounds out the roster with ability-focused upgrades and late-game stat scaling. All of this resets every season. Faction ranks, purchased upgrades, and unlocked skill tree nodes get wiped roughly every three months, meaning the contract grind isn't a one-time investment.
