The Codex is Marathon's permanent progression tracker, accessible from the main screen and split into categories like Career, Feats of Mastery, and individual Runner Shell sections. Each category holds quests with specific objectives, some straightforward and others requiring very particular circumstances to complete. What makes Codex progression stand apart from everything else in Marathon is that it survives the seasonal wipes. Every three months, gear, faction reputation, and Runner Level reset to zero, but completed Codex entries stay on your account permanently. This makes Runner Codex achievements some of the only lasting progression in the game and one of the few ways to prove veteran status once a new season drops and everyone starts from scratch.

Each of Marathon's Runner Shells has a dedicated Codex section with quests built around that shell's unique kit. Vandal challenges might ask for eliminations from significant height using its double jump and aerial mobility. Destroyer objectives could demand multi-kill streaks with Search and Destroy missiles during a single extraction run. Assassin tasks lean into stealth, requiring cloaked eliminations under specific conditions. Triage, Recon, and Thief each have their own sets focused on healing output, intel gathering, and loot acquisition respectively. The problem is that failing any extraction in Marathon means losing your entire equipped loadout. Every attempt at a difficult Codex quest carries actual cost, which is why so many players abandon the harder objectives after losing valuable gear on back-to-back failed runs.

Completing Codex achievements unlocks cosmetics tied directly to your performance: profile badges, player backgrounds, and Runner Shell skins for the corresponding character. Examples include the Baseline Calibration background from the "This is Marathon" achievement and the Sacrificer background earned through "Requiem for a Cyborg." These aren't random loot drops or store items. They're proof of specific accomplishments that other players can verify on your profile. Since Marathon's seasonal model wipes inventories every three months, Codex cosmetics carry extra weight as permanent markers of what you've actually done in the game. Profile badges and backgrounds display on your player card, giving other Runners immediate context about your experience before a match starts.
