NetEase dropped the full Season 5 roadmap for Marvel Rivals, launching November 14, 2025. Gambit joins the roster as a Strategist, breaking the recent string of Duelist releases. The update also brings a massive 36-player Conquest mode, major ranked system changes, and the game's first anniversary event.

Developers Guangguang and Zhiyong walked through the changes in Dev Vision Vol. 11, covering team-up ability reworks and balance adjustments across all three hero classes.

Gambit Launches as Strategist

Gambit arrives November 14 as the newest Strategist hero. AJ LoCascio returns from X-Men '97 to voice the character, which should please fans who loved his take on Remy in the animated series. The Cajun mutant's kit revolves around kinetic energy manipulation using Chronovium-enhanced playing cards, bo staff combat, and team buffs.

Gambit's Ability Kit

Kinetic Shifting lets players combine charged cards to trigger three different effects: heal allies, cleanse negative status effects, or deal knockback damage while applying anti-heal debuffs. The ability requires smart card management to activate the right effect for each situation.

Energy Staff Combat shifts Gambit into melee range. He channels kinetic energy into his bo staff, using nimble movement and martial arts for burst damage. NetEase positioned this as a tool for breaking pressure or supporting aggressive pushes.

Kinetic-Charged Aces is Gambit's ultimate. He launches energized cards to nearby allies, giving them supercharged jumps and explosive damage on basic attacks. The ability's built for coordinated pushes or breaking through choke points.

The Strategist pick addresses a real gap in the roster. NetEase admitted recent seasons leaned too heavily on Duelist releases, leaving support players with fewer fresh options. Gambit's hybrid kit gives Strategist players more aggressive positioning while keeping the core healing and utility intact.

Season 5 Narrative: Love is a Battlefield

The season pulls from the 2018 X-Men: Gold run where Rogue and Gambit married after Kitty Pryde left Piotr Rasputin at the altar. NetEase adapted this for Krakoa, with the game's timestream entanglement interrupting their wedding. Gambit's Season 5 story follows his dimensional quest to find the rarest engagement ring in existence.

Lenore Zann reprises her X-Men '97 role as Rogue alongside LoCascio. Rogue hits the game in the Season 5.5 midseason update roughly one month out, but her class remains unconfirmed.

The Season 5 trailer briefly shows Cyclops at the wedding, hinting at future roster additions. NetEase used similar teasing for Blade's eventual release, seeding characters months before they actually launch.

18v18 Conquest Annihilation Mode

The new large-scale mode goes live November 27, two weeks after the base update. Conquest Annihilation pits 18-player teams against each other on the Grand Garden map. NetEase called it "epic chaos" designed for sprawling objective battles rather than tight 6v6 fights.

Grand Garden handles 36 players through multiple capture zones and expanded geometry. The developers emphasized spectacle and power fantasy over competitive balance. The delayed November 27 launch suggests NetEase wants extra time for optimization or final tuning.

Times Square Social Hub

Season 5 adds Times Square as the game's first dedicated social space. The area supports up to 100 players and includes dance emotes, video viewing, in-game lore reading, and open player interaction.

NetEase cited positive responses to impromptu gatherings in the Doom Match Sanctum Sanctorum. Players were organizing meetups and roleplay in combat zones not built for it, prompting the studio to create proper social infrastructure.

First Anniversary Event

Marvel Rivals hits its one-year mark with an event starting November 27. Players can earn 2,500 Units and a free Legendary Jeff costume just for participating. NetEase didn't detail completion requirements but framed the rewards as guaranteed rather than challenge-locked.

The anniversary brings three exclusive cosmetic collections:

  • Marvel Rivals Style Collection - NetEase's original art team designs
  • Community-Inspired Outfits - Skins based on player submissions
  • Cake Party Theme Costumes - Birthday celebration skins

Heroes getting anniversary cosmetics include Gambit, Human Torch, Magik, Mantis, Wolverine, Phoenix, Thor, Loki, Moon Knight, and Star-Lord. Everything launches November 14, with event rewards starting November 27.

Cross-Platform Progression

Cross-platform progression becomes permanent in Season 5 after Season 4.5 testing. The system syncs cosmetics, emotes, skins, and purchases across all platforms. Ranked progress stays platform-specific, keeping separate competitive ladders for PC and console.

The system applies retroactively. Anyone who bought cosmetics or earned rewards on one platform before this update will see those items across all linked platforms once Season 5 deploys.

Team-Up Ability Overhaul

Three new team-up combinations join the roster with powerful synergies

Season 5 brings the biggest team-up changes since launch. Three new combinations join the game while several existing ones get retired or modified.

New Team-Ups

Explosive Entanglement (Gambit + Magneto)
Gambit anchors this combo, charging Magneto's greatsword with kinetic energy. Magneto's primary attack becomes kinetic-charged strikes that explode on impact, then release unstable energy for a second delayed explosion. The double-blast creates area denial and combo opportunities.

Sword of Duality (Cloak & Dagger + Hawkeye)
Cloak & Dagger anchor this one, pouring light and dark energy into Hawkeye's katana. His Crescent Slash gets a complete rework: it knocks enemies back while firing a piercing wave. The wave passes through allies and enemies, healing and buffing teammates while damaging foes and applying anti-heal.

Blade of Khonshu (Moon Knight + Blade)
Moon Knight anchors, channeling Khonshu's blessing onto Blade. Activation triggers a multi-stage combo: Blade dashes forward with Sword of Dracula strikes, then fires off rapid sword strikes at the end. Each strike launches a moon-blade projectile that bounces between nearby enemies.

Retired and Reworked Team-Ups

Lunar Force and Operation Microchip got completely removed. Mental Projection lost Magneto, while Chilling Assault no longer includes Hawkeye.

Primal Flame Gets Black Widow
Black Widow joins Phoenix and Wolverine in Primal Flame. She gains Phoenix Force ammunition and can toggle between standard and Phoenix bullets mid-combat. Phoenix bullets heal allies on contact and deal AOE damage to enemies, but can't crit.

Balance Changes

Season 5 targets multiple classes with buffs aimed at diversifying picks and fixing Season 4.5 performance gaps. NetEase plans to drop detailed pick and win rate data from Season 4.5 before launch.

Vanguard Buffs

Vanguards get utility-focused changes to make them more valuable beyond damage soaking.

Captain America's Ultimate now helps allies charge their own ults faster when they're in range. Peni Parker's Webs heal allies standing on them. The Thing and Hulk get unspecified utility upgrades rather than survivability or damage increases.

Duelist Tweaks

Spider-Man gets combo consistency improvements. NetEase acknowledged his ability chains feel janky compared to other mobile Duelists. The changes smooth out animation cancels and ability queuing.

Wolverine receives buffs targeting close-range threat. As a melee Duelist, he struggled against heroes with better mobility or range. The adjustments make him more dangerous once he closes distance.

Strategist Changes

Loki gets a targeted buff to stay competitive in his role. Cloak & Dagger gains survivability improvements to help maintain positioning during teamfights.

Ranked System Overhaul

Season 5 fundamentally changes competitive ranking. Hard seasonal resets are gone, replaced by a placement system that calculates starting ranks from previous performance.

Placement Matches

Players complete 10 placement matches each season before getting an official rank. The system assigns a hidden initial rank based on last season's performance, then adjusts based on placement results.

For Season 5's transition, placement calculations use both highest rank from Seasons 0-3 AND final Season 4 rank. This isn't a straight carryover of peak rank but a balance between sustained and peak performance.

More placement wins push the final rank closer to last season's ending. Going 10-0 can place players higher than their previous season finish.

Placements only happen once per full season. Finishing all 10 in the first half (Season 5.0) carries that rank through the second half (Season 5.5). Skipping first-half placements means completing them in the second half to qualify for season-end rewards.

Queue Size Rules

Team queue sizes scale by highest-ranked player. Teams with everyone at Grandmaster or below can queue as 2, 3, 4, or 6 players.

Any team member at Celestial, Eternity, or Top 500 limits the whole party to duos. NetEase implemented this to protect competitive integrity at high ranks.

Placement matches add more restrictions. Teams with anyone still in placements can only queue as trios max. When multiple restrictions conflict (one player in placements, one at Celestial), the strictest rule wins. That example would force duo queue.

Ranked Rewards Changes

Ranked Costume Rewards keep their existing structure. Hit Gold and play 10 matches in Season 5.0 to get the costume when Season 5.5 launches. Miss first-half requirements and players can still earn both 5.0 and 5.5 costumes by hitting Gold and playing 10 in Season 5.5.

Crest of Honor and Nameplate Frames got restructured. Instead of two distributions per season, NetEase consolidated them into single rewards after Season 5.5 ends. One set per full season moving forward.

Season 4.5 rewards aren't affected and distribute on the old schedule. NetEase framed the changes as pressure relief, giving players more flexibility in competitive planning.

PvE Development Plans

Marvel Rivals Marvel Zombies mode
Marvel Zombies proved PvE potential with expanded content planned for 2025

Marvel Zombies at Halloween was Marvel Rivals' first PvE test. NetEase detailed the technical challenges of building it in six months. The team pushed engine limits with 200+ simultaneous on-screen zombies while keeping frame rates playable.

NetEase committed to continued PvE investment. 2025 will bring expanded PvE content with more heroes, custom maps, and themes beyond zombies.
