Gearing Fundamentals

Beast Mastery Hunters in The Burning Crusade Classic follow a unique gearing progression built around maintaining powerful set bonuses while stacking raw damage stats. This guide covers every phase of TBC Classic, from your first heroic dungeons through the halls of Sunwell Plateau.

Hunter gearing has several quirks that set the class apart from other DPS specs. You'll need to juggle hit rating based on raid composition, maintain tier set bonuses through multiple transitions, understand how melee weapons actually affect your ranged damage through weightstones, and decide whether melee weaving fits your playstyle. This guide breaks down all of these considerations while giving you concrete gear recommendations for every slot.

Beast Mastery Hunter with Pet
Beast Mastery Hunters rely on their powerful pets for a significant portion of their DPS output

Hit Rating Requirements

Beast Mastery Hunters need to reach hit cap so their attacks reliably connect against raid bosses. Your exact hit rating target depends on raid composition:

Critical Hit Caps
6% Hit Cap (47 Hit Rating): Your target when your raid includes a Balance Druid providing Improved Faerie Fire. The 3% spell hit from this debuff also applies to physical attacks.

9% Hit Cap (142 Hit Rating): Your target when your raid doesn't have a reliable Balance Druid. Throughout this guide, gear sets for both scenarios are provided where applicable.

If your group includes a Draenei Paladin, Warrior, or Hunter providing Heroic Presence, you gain 1% hit and can reduce your requirements further. This guide assumes you don't have Heroic Presence, covering the most demanding scenario.

The Beast Lord Set Bonus

The Beast Lord Armor set from heroic dungeons provides one of the most powerful bonuses available to Hunters in early TBC. The 4-piece set bonus significantly increases your pet's damage, which makes up a substantial portion of Beast Mastery Hunter DPS. This set stays relevant well into Phase 1 raiding and even into Phase 2 until you can acquire enough Tier 5 pieces to replace it.

Beast Lord Piece Source Drop Location
Beast Lord Helm Pathaleon the Calculator The Mechanar
Beast Lord Mantle Warlord Kalithresh The Steamvault
Beast Lord Cuirass Warp Splinter The Botanica
Beast Lord Handguards Warchief Kargath Bladefist The Shattered Halls
Beast Lord Leggings Warlord Kalithresh The Steamvault

The Helm, Mantle, and Handguards are locked in regardless of your overall gear set. You won't replace these pieces. The Cuirass and Leggings are the flexible slots that can be swapped based on available alternatives.

Melee Weapons and Ranged Damage

A unique mechanic in TBC Classic affects Hunter weapon choices: Adamantite Weightstone and Adamantite Sharpening Stone currently affect ranged weapon damage and critical strike rating, not just melee stats. This makes fist weapons with weightstones the best choice for dual-wielding since they provide the same ranged benefit while letting you use the stronger weightstone consumable.

Melee Weaving Explained
Melee weaving is an advanced technique where Hunters move into melee range between ranged shots to land a melee swing, then move back out to continue their ranged rotation. When executed properly, this technique can significantly increase DPS. If you plan to melee weave, you'll want a powerful two-handed weapon like Mooncleaver (Blacksmithing crafted). If you don't plan to melee weave, dual-wielding fist weapons with weightstones is your best option.

Recommendation: Practice melee weaving with cheaper dungeon weapons before investing heavily in crafted options. The technique requires precise timing and positioning, and not all players find the playstyle enjoyable or worth the effort.

Aldor vs. Scryer Reputation

For Beast Mastery Hunters, The Aldor is the better faction choice for min-maxing, though the difference is minor. The shoulder enchant Greater Inscription of Vengeance from The Aldor is slightly better than Greater Inscription of the Blade from The Scryers.

One of your pre-raid BiS rings (Kaylaan's Signet) also comes from an Aldor-only quest, making Aldor the recommended choice if you want to squeeze out every advantage from the start. That said, the DPS difference between the two factions is minimal. If you've already chosen Scryers, you won't notice a significant performance gap.

Pre-Raid Best in Slot

Before stepping into Karazhan, you need to prepare your Hunter with the best gear available from dungeons, heroics, professions, and reputations. The pre-raid phase focuses on acquiring your Beast Lord 4-piece set bonus while filling remaining slots with the strongest available alternatives. The Primalstrike crafted set from Elemental Leatherworking represents the absolute BiS option for several slots, though it requires significant investment.

Bloodlust Brooch (G'eras, 41 Badges of Justice)

Continues from pre-raid.

Trinket Choice Note
The choice between Romulo's Poison Vial and Dragonspine Trophy depends on your hit cap status. Romulo's Poison Vial (Romulo, Karazhan Opera Event) is reported to have approximately 3% proc chance on every attack. Dragonspine Trophy has an average of 1 proc per minute with roughly 20% haste increase and a hidden 20-second internal cooldown.

Other Options:

  • Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle (The Big Bad Wolf, Karazhan)
  • Steelhawk Crossbow (Attumen the Huntsman, Karazhan)

Phase 2: Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep

Phase 2 marks the transition from Beast Lord Armor to Rift Stalker Armor (Tier 5). This is a critical gearing phase with several important considerations.

Phase 2 Transition Strategy
Critical Rule: You must have all 4 pieces of Tier 5 before you can break your Beast Lord 4-piece bonus. Until you acquire 4 pieces of Rift Stalker, continue wearing your Beast Lord set.

The Rift Stalker pieces you'll equip are:

  • Rift Stalker Helm (Lady Vashj, Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Rift Stalker Mantle (Void Reaver, Tempest Keep)
  • Rift Stalker Hauberk (Kael'thas Sunstrider, Tempest Keep)
  • Rift Stalker Gauntlets (Leotheras the Blind, Serpentshrine Cavern)

Nearly all "absolute BiS" items this phase come from Lady Vashj and Kael'thas Sunstrider, the final bosses of each raid. Luckily, strong alternatives exist for most slots.

Rift Stalker Armor Set
The Rift Stalker Armor (Tier 5) set replaces Beast Lord once you have all four pieces

Phase 2 Gear Sets

Two gear sets are relevant this phase:

6% Hit Set: Used if your raid has a reliable Balance Druid providing Improved Faerie Fire.

9% Hit Set: Used if your raid lacks a Balance Druid.

The primary differences between these sets are the ring loadout and one gem in the belt slot.

Phase 2 Engineering Goggles Note

With Phase 2, Engineers can craft Surestrike Goggles v2.0. Because Beast Lord Helm is required for your 4-piece set bonus until you complete Tier 5, crafting these goggles isn't recommended. The set bonus provides more DPS than the goggle stats.

Phase 2 Head Slot

Best in Slot: Rift Stalker Helm

Source: Helm of the Vanquished Hero token from Lady Vashj (Serpentshrine Cavern)

Gem with Relentless Earthstorm Diamond (meta) and Bold Ornate Ruby.

Until Tier 5: Beast Lord Helm

Continue using until you have 4 pieces of Rift Stalker.

Alternative Options:

  • Surestrike Goggles v2.0 (Engineering), Only after completing Tier 5 transition.
  • Demon Stalker Greathelm (Karazhan token)
  • Mask of the Deceiver (50 Badges of Justice)

Phase 2 Shoulder Slot

Best in Slot: Rift Stalker Mantle

Source: Pauldrons of the Vanquished Hero token from Void Reaver (Tempest Keep)

Gem with 2x Delicate Living Ruby.

Until Tier 5: Beast Lord Mantle

Alternative Options:

  • Shoulderpads of the Stranger (Hydross the Unstable, Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Mantle of the Tireless Tracker (Morogrim Tidewalker, Serpentshrine Cavern)

Phase 2 Back Slot

Best in Slot: Thalassian Wildercloak

Source: Kael'thas Sunstrider (Tempest Keep)

New BiS cloak for Phase 2.

Alternative Options:

  • Vengeance Wrap (still close second; Phase 1 investment stays valuable)
  • Blood Knight War Cloak (25 Badges of Justice)
  • Cloak of the Pit Stalker (Magtheridon)
  • Drape of the Dark Reavers (Shade of Aran, Karazhan)

Phase 2 Chest Slot

Best in Slot: Rift Stalker Hauberk

Source: Kael'thas Sunstrider (Tempest Keep)

Gem with Shifting Tanzanite, Inscribed Ornate Topaz, and Smooth Ornate Dawnstone.

Until Tier 5: Beast Lord Cuirass

Alternative Options:

  • Ranger-General's Chestguard (Hydross the Unstable, Serpentshrine Cavern), Potential off-set piece but not absolute BiS.
  • Primalstrike Vest

Phase 2 Wrist Slot

Best in Slot: Vambraces of Ending

Source: High Astromancer Solarian (Tempest Keep)

Gem with Delicate Living Ruby.

Close Alternative: Bands of the Celestial Archer

Source: Trash mobs (Tempest Keep)

Extremely close in DPS; the difference is negligible in realistic gameplay. This provides gearing flexibility.

Other Options:

  • True-Aim Stalker Bands (Leotheras the Blind, Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Nightfall Wristguards (Heroic Old Hillsbrad)

Phase 2 Hand Slot

Best in Slot: Rift Stalker Gauntlets

Source: Leotheras the Blind (Serpentshrine Cavern)

No alternative should be prioritized; these are needed for Tier 5.

Until Tier 5: Beast Lord Handguards

Phase 2 Waist Slot

Best in Slot: Belt of Deep Shadow

Source: Trash mobs in Serpentshrine Cavern (Pattern: Belt of Deep Shadow)

Gem with 2x Delicate Living Ruby (or swap one for Glinting Fire Opal if pursuing 9% hit).

Alternative Options:

  • Belt of the Black Eagle (Serpentshrine Cavern trash, Leatherworking pattern)
  • Belt of One-Hundred Deaths (Lady Vashj, Serpentshrine Cavern), Extremely strong but prioritize for melee DPS due to expertise rating.
  • Gronn-Stitched Girdle (Phase 1)

Phase 2 Leg Slot

Best in Slot: Leggings of Murderous Intent

Source: Kael'thas Sunstrider (Tempest Keep)

The off-set piece of Tier 5; your legs won't be Rift Stalker.

Close Alternative: Void Reaver Greaves

Source: Void Reaver (Tempest Keep)

Very close second; provides gearing options.

Other Options:

  • Rift Stalker Leggings (Fathom-Lord Karathress, Serpentshrine Cavern), Can be used but Leggings of Murderous Intent is preferred.
  • Scaled Greaves of the Marksman (World Boss)
  • Skulker's Greaves (Karazhan)
  • Midnight Legguards (Heroic Slave Pens)

Phase 2 Foot Slot

Best in Slot Options:

Cobra-Lash Boots (Lady Vashj, Serpentshrine Cavern)

Technically absolute BiS due to slightly more intellect.

Star-Strider Boots (High Astromancer Solarian, Tempest Keep)

Identical DPS stats to Cobra-Lash Boots; either is excellent.

Both options gem with Shifting Nightseye and Delicate Living Ruby.

Alternative Options:

  • Boots of Effortless Striking (The Lurker Below, Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Edgewalker Longboots (Phase 1)
  • Fel Leather Boots (if hit rating is needed)

Phase 2 Neck Slot

Best in Slot: Telonicus's Pendant of Mayhem

Source: Quest reward from Verdant Sphere (drops from Kael'thas Sunstrider)

Highly contested by many classes; may require patience depending on loot system.

Alternative Options:

  • Choker of Animalistic Fury (The Lurker Below, Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Saberclaw Talisman (Karazhan)
  • Choker of Vile Intent (Badges)

Phase 2 Ring Slots

For 6% Hit Set:

  • Ring of the Recalcitrant (Phase 1)
  • Band of the Ranger-General (Kael'thas Sunstrider, Tempest Keep)

For 9% Hit Set:

  • Ring of Lethality (Hydross the Unstable, Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Band of the Ranger-General (Kael'thas Sunstrider, Tempest Keep)

Other Options:

  • Band of Eternity (Quest: Champion's Pledge, Caverns of Time)
  • Ring of a Thousand Marks (Karazhan)
  • Garona's Signet Ring (Karazhan)

Ring Enchant: Enchant Ring - Striking (requires maintaining 360 Enchanting). Note that Enchant Ring - Stats becomes available in Phase 3.

Phase 2 Trinket Slots

Best in Slot:

Dragonspine Trophy (Phase 1), Still BiS.

Bloodlust Brooch (Badges), Still BiS second trinket.

Alternative Options:

  • Tsunami Talisman (Leotheras the Blind, Serpentshrine Cavern), Upgraded version of Hourglass of the Unraveller but relies on low proc chance; only beneficial on very short fights.

Phase 2 Weapons

Main Hand

Best in Slot: Talon of the Phoenix

Source: Al'ar (Tempest Keep)

BiS since Adamantite Weightstone affects ranged damage.

Alternative Options:

  • Claw of the Watcher (Phase 1)
  • Netherbane (Al'ar, Tempest Keep)

Off Hand

Best in Slot: Claw of the Phoenix

Source: Al'ar (Tempest Keep)

Continues the fist weapon strategy.

Alternative Options:

  • Netherbane (Al'ar)
  • Blade of the Unrequited (Karazhan)

Two-Handed (Melee Weaving)

Best in Slot Options:

Twinblade of the Phoenix (Kael'thas Sunstrider, Tempest Keep)

Best melee weaving weapon.

Bloodmoon (Blacksmithing crafted)

Excellent but will likely have low priority for Hunters as Nether Vortex is more valuable to other classes.

Note: If not melee weaving, dual-wield Talon of the Phoenix and Claw of the Phoenix with Adamantite Weightstones.

Phase 2 Ranged Weapon

Best in Slot: Serpent Spine Longbow

Source: Lady Vashj (Serpentshrine Cavern)

Clear upgrade over Phase 1 options.

PvP Alternative: Merciless Gladiator's Crossbow of the Phoenix

Source: 3750 Arena Points (Season 2)

Note for Dwarf Hunters: Arcanite Steam-Pistol (Al'ar, Tempest Keep) is a relatively close second. During the Kael'thas encounter, you'll switch to Netherstrand Longbow, which requires a quiver. You can't swap between ammo pouch and quiver in combat, so maintain a bow for the first phases of Kael'thas.

Phase 2 Ammunition

Best Arrows: Adamantite Stinger

Source: Schematic from Sunfury Archer drops (Netherstorm)

Craftable via Adamantite Arrow Maker; allows carrying more ammo.

Best Bullets: Adamantite Shells

Source: Schematic purchased from Wind Trader Lathrai (Shattrath City)

Craftable via Adamantite Shell Machine.

Phase 2 Badge of Justice Priority

No new Hunter-relevant items are added in Phase 2. If you haven't acquired these items yet, priority stays:

  • Bloodlust Brooch (41 Badges)
  • Choker of Vile Intent (25 Badges)
  • Blood Knight War Cloak (25 Badges)

Phase 3: Black Temple and Mount Hyjal

Phase 3 introduces Armor Penetration and Haste as new stats on gear. While there isn't enough static haste to prioritize yet, armor penetration provides significant DPS gains. This phase also introduces Tier 6 (Gronnstalker) gear.

Phase 3 Gearing Strategy

Phase 3 has two primary gear sets based on boss armor values:

6200 Armor Bosses: Certain bosses have lower armor values.

7700 Armor Bosses: Standard boss armor.

The main differences between these sets are melee weapon loadout. The 6200 armor set assumes you can reach 1850 Arena rating for Vengeful Gladiator's Left Ripper.

Phase 3 Critical Contested Items
Three items are highly contested by all physical DPS this phase:

Cursed Vision of Sargeras (Illidan Stormrage, Black Temple)
Madness of the Betrayer (The Illidari Council, Black Temple)
Stormrage Signet Ring (Illidan Stormrage, Black Temple)

Expecting all three is unrealistic for most players. Realistic gear sets accounting for this are provided alongside absolute BiS.
Gronnstalker Armor Set
The Gronnstalker Armor (Tier 6) set becomes available in Phase 3 from Black Temple and Hyjal Summit

Phase 3 Tier 6 Transition

The transition to Tier 6 (Gronnstalker) is more complex than the Tier 5 transition:

Priority Order for Breaking Tier 5:

Cursed Vision of Sargeras provides such a significant DPS gain that you can break 4-piece Tier 5 for it alone and still come out ahead. After acquiring it, you can swap legs to Rift Stalker Leggings to regain 4-piece Tier 5.

Gronnstalker's Spaulders + Gronnstalker's Gloves together allow breaking 4-piece Tier 5 if you haven't acquired Cursed Vision of Sargeras.

Don't equip Tier 6 pieces individually until you have a strategy to maintain or exceed your previous set bonus value.

Phase 3 Head Slot

Best in Slot: Cursed Vision of Sargeras

Source: Illidan Stormrage (Black Temple)

Should be your highest priority heading into Phase 3. Multiple reasons justify prioritizing this for Hunters:

  • Hit rating is difficult to maintain when dropping Tier 5 for Tier 6; this helm provides critical hit rating.
  • The DPS gain over Rift Stalker Helm is so significant you can break 4-piece Tier 5 for it and still come out ahead.

If Not Prioritized for Cursed Vision:

Vengeful Gladiator's Chain Helm (Arena PvP gear)

Provides additional hit rating compared to other alternatives, easing the transition.

Note: Gronnstalker's Helmet (Tier 6 helm from Archimonde) is best for Survival Hunters. Don't take this over Survival Hunters under any circumstances.

Alternative Options:

  • Forest Prowler's Helm (High Nethermancer Zerevor, Black Temple)
  • Rift Stalker Helm (continue using until Tier 6 transition)

Phase 3 Shoulder Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Spaulders

Source: Pauldrons of the Forgotten Protector token from Mother Shahraz (Black Temple)

One of the better individual Tier 6 pieces. Paired with gloves, these are the best two pieces to break 4-piece Tier 5 with.

Gem with 2x Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Note: Hunters now share tier tokens with Warriors and Shamans. Warriors can use these tokens immediately while Hunters must wait until acquiring at least 2 pieces with supporting gear to make the swap.

Until Tier 6: Rift Stalker Mantle

Alternative Options:

  • Beast-tamer's Shoulders (Kaz'rogal, Hyjal Summit)
  • Shoulders of the Hidden Predator (Shade of Akama, Black Temple)
  • Swiftstrike Shoulders (Leatherworking pattern from Black Temple)
  • Shoulders of Lightning Reflexes (Leatherworking pattern from Black Temple)

Phase 3 Back Slot

The best cloak depends heavily on your overall gear set:

Best in Slot (with Madness of the Betrayer and Stormrage Signet Ring): Thalassian Wildercloak

Best in Slot (without Madness and/or Stormrage): Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape

Source: Teron Gorefiend (Black Temple)

Good Hit Rating Option: Drape of the Dark Reavers

Source: Shade of Aran (Karazhan)

Useful early in Phase 3 while working on hit cap.

Phase 3 Chest Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Chestguard

Source: Chestguard of the Forgotten Protector token from Illidan Stormrage (Black Temple)

By itself, this isn't the best piece to prioritize early. You can't use it without the rest of the set or you'll break 4-piece Tier 5.

Pass this tier token to Warriors first as they can use it immediately. Only pursue after acquiring Tier 6 Shoulders and Gloves.

Until Tier 6: Rift Stalker Hauberk

No other alternatives should be used or picked up; wait for Tier 6.

Phase 3 Wrist Slot

Best in Slot: Insidious Bands

Source: Teron Gorefiend (Black Temple)

Important piece to acquire early since the hit rating helps in all situations. Not highly contested.

Gem with Wicked Pyrestone.

Alternative Options:

  • Vambraces of Ending (Phase 2 BiS, continue using)
  • Wraps of Precise Flight (Supremus, Black Temple)
  • Bands of the Celestial Archer (Tempest Keep trash)
  • Bindings of Lightning Reflexes / Swiftstrike Bracers (Leatherworking patterns from Black Temple), May be expensive early due to limited Heart of Darkness supply.

Phase 3 Hand Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Gloves

Source: Gloves of the Forgotten Protector token from Azgalor (Hyjal Summit)

The second biggest piece of Tier 6. When paired with Spaulders, allows breaking 4-piece Tier 5 (assuming you didn't already break it with Cursed Vision of Sargeras).

Should be one of your highest priorities in Phase 3.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Until Tier 6: Rift Stalker Gauntlets

Phase 3 Waist Slot

Best in Slot: Don Alejandro's Money Belt

Source: Anetheron (Hyjal Summit)

Best choice if you have means of supplying hit rating from other sources.

Gem with 2x Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Best Hit Option: Boneweave Girdle

Source: Essence of Anger (Black Temple)

Best route if you can't obtain hit-rating items like Madness of the Betrayer or Stormrage Signet Ring.

Phase 3 Leg Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Leggings

Source: Leggings of the Forgotten Protector token from The Illidari Council (Black Temple)

Completes 4-piece Tier 6. This is the weakest individual piece of Tier 6 and should only be equipped once ready for the full transition.

Acquiring this token should be relatively easy; have it ready for when you complete your other pieces.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Strategy with Early Cursed Vision of Sargeras:

If you acquired Cursed Vision early and broke 4-piece Tier 5, you can swap to Rift Stalker Leggings to regain 4-piece Tier 5 for an even bigger early DPS gain.

Realistic Alternative (without Cursed Vision): Shady Dealer's Pantaloons

Source: Azgalor (Hyjal Summit)

Note: Bow-stitched Leggings (Azgalor) would technically be better but should never be taken over Survival Hunters, Enhancement Shamans, or Retribution Paladins who all heavily prioritize this item.

Phase 3 Foot Slot

Best in Slot: Shadowmaster's Boots

Source: Mother Shahraz (Black Temple)

One of the smaller upgrades from Phase 2 but not highly contested.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel and Wicked Pyrestone.

Hit Rating Options:

  • Softstep Boots of Tracking (Teron Gorefiend, Black Temple)
  • Quickstrider Moccasins (Anetheron, Hyjal Summit)

Note: Enhancement Shamans may also want these; don't take from them as Hunters have many other hit options.

Good Option for Early 4-Piece Tier 6: Edgewalker Longboots

If your guild prioritizes you early for 4-piece Tier 6, switching back to these helps offset hit rating loss from Tier 5.

Phase 3 Neck Slot

Best in Slot: Choker of Serrated Blades

Source: Trash mobs (Black Temple / Hyjal Summit)

Only a minor upgrade over Telonicus's Pendant of Mayhem. Multiple may drop due to trash drop rates; don't rush to acquire if you already have the Phase 2 neck.

Good Hit Option: Choker of Endless Nightmares

Source: Supremus (Black Temple)

Contested by other classes; if it's their BiS, don't take from them.

Phase 3 Ring Slots

Rings see significant swapping this phase based on personal requirements:

6% BiS:

  • Stormrage Signet Ring (Illidan Stormrage)
  • Band of the Eternal Champion (Quest: Champion's Covenant, Exalted with The Scale of the Sands)

6% Realistic BiS (without Stormrage):

  • Band of the Ranger-General (Kael'thas Sunstrider)
  • Band of the Eternal Champion

9% BiS:

  • Stormrage Signet Ring
  • Band of the Eternal Champion

Recommendation: While Stormrage Signet Ring is absolute BiS, it's one of the smallest upgrades for Beast Mastery Hunters compared to other classes. Consider passing to other classes and focusing on Cursed Vision of Sargeras and Madness of the Betrayer instead.

Hit Rating Options:

  • Band of the Ranger-General (Tempest Keep)
  • Ring of Deceitful Intent (Shade of Akama, Black Temple)
  • Ring of Lethality (Serpentshrine Cavern)
  • Ring of a Thousand Marks (Karazhan)
  • Garona's Signet Ring (Karazhan)

Ring Enchant: Enchant Ring - Stats (now available in Phase 3, requires Enchanting)

Phase 3 Trinket Slots

Best in Slot:

Dragonspine Trophy, Still first BiS trinket.

Madness of the Betrayer (The Illidari Council, Black Temple)

Replaces Bloodlust Brooch as second BiS.

Highly contested by nearly every physical DPS and even Feral Druid tanks.

Recommendation: Don't place this as your highest priority early; acquire after Cursed Vision of Sargeras and 4-piece Tier 6. You may wait a while for your turn so continue using Bloodlust Brooch.

Alternative Options:

  • Bloodlust Brooch (continue using until Madness)
  • Ashtongue Talisman of Swiftness (Okuno, Exalted with Ashtongue Deathsworn), Very close to Bloodlust Brooch.

Note: If you're not prioritized for Cursed Vision of Sargeras, placing Madness of the Betrayer higher on your priority list is advisable.

Phase 3 Weapons

Main Hand

Best in Slot: Boundless Agony

Source: Azgalor (Hyjal Summit)

Should not be contested by other classes; free pickup for Beast Mastery Hunters.

Enchant with Greater Agility.

Good Alternative with Hit Rating: Vengeful Gladiator's Right Ripper

Source: Arena PvP (1850 rating)

Paired with Vengeful Gladiator's Left Ripper provides 8/16 hit rating and is very close to non-PvP BiS.

Hit Options:

  • Talon of the Phoenix (Phase 2)
  • Claw of the Watcher (regem with 2x Delicate Crimson Spinel and re-enchant with Greater Agility; stays quite good with Adamantite Weightstone)

Off Hand

Best in Slot (7700 Armor Bosses): Blade of Infamy

Source: Anetheron (Hyjal Summit)

Contested item. Pass the first two to your Survival Hunter, then possibly Human Fury Warriors.

Best in Slot (6200 Armor Bosses): Vengeful Gladiator's Left Ripper

Source: Arena PvP (1850 rating)

Highly recommended to pursue arena for this weapon.

Hit Option: Tracker's Blade

Source: Rage Winterchill (Hyjal Summit)

Should be a free pickup; uncontested. Don't pass on this early.

Other Options:

  • Messenger of Fate (Gurtogg Bloodboil, Black Temple)
  • Claw of the Phoenix (Phase 2)
  • Fist of Molten Fury (Hyjal Summit trash)

Two-Handed (Melee Weaving)

Best for Weaving: Twinblade of the Phoenix

Continue using from Phase 2 if you re-gem with 3x Delicate Crimson Spinel.

When not weaving in Phase 3, switch to dual-wield options due to better weapons and new enchants.

Best for Hit Rating: Halberd of Desolation

Source: High Warlord Naj'entus (Black Temple)

Incredibly useful early for every Hunter. Not contested by other classes; 30 hit rating helps greatly while working on gear set.

This shouldn't be a long-term item since relying on it is a significant DPS loss compared to other options.

Phase 3 Ranged Weapon

Best in Slot: Bristleblitz Striker

Source: Archimonde (Hyjal Summit)

Best from a pure DPS standpoint.

Close Second: Black Bow of the Betrayer

Source: Illidan Stormrage (Black Temple)

Better suited for those struggling with mana due to low Judgement of Wisdom uptime or speedrun groups with limited drinking time.

Best for Dwarf Hunters: Vengeful Gladiator's Rifle

Source: 3750 Arena Points, Season 3 (1850 rating)

Recommended to do arena weekly and push for 1850 rating.

Phase 3 Quivers, Ammo Pouches, and Ammunition

New BiS Quiver: Quiver of a Thousand Feathers

Source: Leatherworking crafted (Pattern from G'eras, Shattrath City)

Provides additional 6 ammo slots over previous options.

New BiS Ammo Pouch: Netherscale Ammo Pouch

Source: Leatherworking crafted (Pattern from Hellfire Peninsula vendors)

Best Arrows: Timeless Arrow

Source: Marksman Bova (Aldor) / Archer Delvinar (Scryer) in Shattrath City

Requires Honored with The Scale of the Sands.

Alternative: Mysterious Arrow

Requires Revered with The Violet Eye.

Best Bullets: Timeless Shell

Source: Same vendors as Timeless Arrow

Requires Honored with The Scale of the Sands.

Phase 3 Badge of Justice Priority

No new gear pieces Hunters will want. Priority stays:

  • Bloodlust Brooch (41 Badges)
  • Choker of Vile Intent (25 Badges)
  • Blood Knight War Cloak (25 Badges)

Phase 4: Zul'Aman

Phase 4 adds the 10-man raid Zul'Aman. While not as gear-heavy as previous phases, three significant items make this phase important for Hunters.

Phase 4 Key Items
Dagger of Bad Mojo (Hex Lord Malacrass): New BiS melee weapons

Signet of Primal Wrath (Timed Chest): New ring option

Berserker's Call (Zul'jin): New BiS trinket

Phase 4 Gear Set Changes

The absolute BiS set for Phase 4 requires some gear swapping compared to Phase 3:

  • Choker of Endless Nightmares (previously just a hit option) becomes BiS neck
  • Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape becomes BiS cloak
  • Boneweave Girdle becomes absolute BiS belt

These pieces stay contested by Fury Warriors and other classes, so "realistic" alternatives using Stormrage Signet Ring (if you obtained it) are only 3-4 DPS behind absolute BiS.

Zul'Aman Raid
Zul'Aman provides several key upgrades for Beast Mastery Hunters in Phase 4

Phase 4 Equipment Slot Updates

Most slots stay identical to Phase 3. The key changes:

Neck Slot

Best in Slot: Choker of Endless Nightmares

Source: Supremus (Black Temple)

Previously optional, now becomes BiS. May be difficult to obtain as Fury Warriors and other classes may have higher priority.

Back Slot

Best in Slot: Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape

Source: Teron Gorefiend (Black Temple)

Becomes BiS due to gear swapping for hit cap maintenance.

New Alternative: Cloak of Fiends

Source: Timed Chest (Zul'Aman)

Waist Slot

Best in Slot: Boneweave Girdle

Source: Essence of Anger (Black Temple)

The hit rating becomes necessary for maintaining hit cap with Phase 4 gear configuration.

New Alternative: Bladeangel's Money Belt

Source: Nalorakk (Zul'Aman)

Ring Slots

6% BiS:

  • Signet of Primal Wrath (Timed Chest, Zul'Aman)
  • Band of the Eternal Champion

9% BiS:

  • Stormrage Signet Ring (Black Temple)
  • Band of the Eternal Champion

Recommendation: If you obtained Stormrage Signet Ring in Phase 3, continue using it. It's only very slightly behind absolute BiS and represents a major item you were given.

Trinket Slots

Best in Slot:

Dragonspine Trophy, Still first BiS.

Berserker's Call (Zul'jin, Zul'Aman), New second BiS, replacing Madness of the Betrayer.

Hit Alternative: Madness of the Betrayer

Still relatively good if you desperately need hit rating and no one else needs it.

Phase 4 Weapons

Main Hand and Off Hand

Best in Slot: Dagger of Bad Mojo (both slots)

Source: Hex Lord Malacrass (Zul'Aman)

Dual-wielding these is the new best setup assuming you don't need hit from alternatives.

Alternative Options:

  • Boundless Agony (Phase 3)
  • Vengeful Gladiator weapons (for hit rating)
  • Talon of the Phoenix (for hit rating)

Two-Handed (Melee Weaving)

New Option: Trollbane

Source: Timed Chest (Zul'Aman)

Practically identical to Twinblade of the Phoenix in DPS.

Ranged Weapon

New Options:

  • Ancient Amani Longbow (Zul'jin, Zul'Aman), Good temporary option if unlucky with Phase 3 bows.
  • Tuskbreaker (Timed Chest, Zul'Aman)

Phase 4 Badge of Justice Options

New items available:

Nyn'jah's Tabi Boots (60 Badges)

Not BiS but the 22 hit rating helps significantly with hit cap, especially during Tier 6 transition.

Dory's Embrace (60 Badges)

Decent cloak option if you don't have Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape.

Master Assassin Wristwraps (35 Badges)

Decent temporary pickup while waiting for Insidious Bands.

Phase 5: Sunwell Plateau

Phase 5 brings the final raid tier and the legendary Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury. Nearly every piece of gear from Phase 4 will be replaced, with few exceptions.

Phase 5 Legendary: Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury
Contrary to misinformation dating back to 2007-2008 and private servers, Thori'dal IS absolute BiS for Hunters and is actually extremely overpowered.

Expected DPS Gain: 200-285 DPS depending on current gear.

This makes Thori'dal the single biggest item upgrade you can receive as a Hunter in TBC Classic. Most Hunters will have to settle for Golden Bow of Quel'Thalas instead.
Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury
Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury is the ultimate Hunter weapon in TBC Classic

Phase 5 Gear That Carries Over from Phase 4

Only a few items are NOT replaced in Phase 5:

  • Gronnstalker's Spaulders (Tier 6 shoulders)
  • Dragonspine Trophy (with one specific exception)

Dragonspine Trophy Replacement: DST is only replaced if you obtain BOTH Thori'dal and Blackened Naaru Sliver. Without Thori'dal, continue using DST.

Phase 5 Tier 6 Strategy

In Phase 5, you'll acquire three new Tier 6 pieces from Sunwell to maintain 4-piece bonus:

  • Gronnstalker's Bracers (Kalecgos)
  • Gronnstalker's Belt (Brutallus)
  • Gronnstalker's Boots (Felmyst)

Combined with Gronnstalker's Spaulders from Phase 3/4, this gives you 4-piece Tier 6 while opening other slots for Sunwell upgrades.

Phase 5 Head Slot

Best in Slot (6%): Coif of Alleria

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

Stats are unmatched; should be a higher priority item.

Best in Slot (9%): Duplicitous Guise

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

Absolute BiS if your raid has no Boomkin. Contested by Retribution Paladins.

Previous Phase Option: Cursed Vision of Sargeras

Stays strong until you obtain Sunwell helms.

Phase 5 Shoulder Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Spaulders

Continue using from Phase 3/4; won't be replaced.

Re-gem for Phase 5 with Smooth Lionseye and Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst.

If Returning for Phase 5:

  • Mantle of the Golden Forest (Lady Sacrolash, Sunwell Plateau)
  • Shoulderpads of Vehemence (Lady Sacrolash, Sunwell Plateau)

Phase 5 Back Slot

Best in Slot: Cloak of Unforgivable Sin

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

Heavily contested by physical DPS; not one of the biggest upgrades so don't prioritize over other classes.

Gem with Glinting Pyrestone.

Until Sunwell Cloak:

Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape and Thalassian Wildercloak both stay perfectly fine well into Phase 5.

Phase 5 Chest Slot

Best in Slot: Bladed Chaos Tunic

Source: M'uru (transferred from Harness of Carnal Instinct + Sunmote)

Significant gain over all alternatives; huge upgrade for every physical DPS class. Hunters gain more from it than nearly every other class.

Gem with Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst, Stone of Blades, and Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Best Alternative: Vicious Hawkstrider Hauberk

Source: M'uru (Sunwell Plateau)

Same gem configuration.

Leatherworking Options:

  • Embrace of the Phoenix (M'uru), Slightly better of the crafted options.
  • Carapace of Sun and Shadow (M'uru), Use if you need hit rating.

Phase 5 Wrist Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Bracers

Source: Bracers of the Forgotten Protector token from Kalecgos (Sunwell Plateau)

One of three Tier 6 pieces acquired in Sunwell.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Until Tier 6: Insidious Bands

Phase 5 Hand Slot

Best in Slot Options:

Gloves of Immortal Dusk (Leatherworking pattern from Sunwell)

Crafted BoE; easier to obtain than contested drop.

Gem with 2x Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Thalassian Ranger Gauntlets (Kil'jaeden, Sunwell Plateau)

Within 1 DPS of Gloves of Immortal Dusk.

Better on 7700 armor bosses and trash but heavily contested.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel and Smooth Lionseye.

Both options are effectively equal; choose based on availability.

Phase 5 Waist Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Belt

Source: Belt of the Forgotten Protector token from Brutallus (Sunwell Plateau)

Second of three Tier 6 pieces from Sunwell; provides significant hit rating.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Until Tier 6: Boneweave Girdle

Phase 5 Leg Slot

Best in Slot: Leggings of the Immortal Night

Source: Felmyst (Sunwell Plateau)

The biggest upgrade outside of Thori'dal. Stats are exceptional and provide 1/3 of your entire hit rating requirement.

Highly contested (rogues also prioritize heavily).

Gem with 3x Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Best Alternative: Starstalker Legguards

Source: Kalecgos (Sunwell Plateau)

Badge Option: Trousers of the Scryers' Retainer (100 Badges)

Significant DPS loss from BiS but helps with hit rating if you're low priority on better options.

Phase 5 Foot Slot

Best in Slot: Gronnstalker's Boots

Source: Boots of the Forgotten Protector token from Felmyst (Sunwell Plateau)

Third of three Tier 6 pieces from Sunwell.

Gem with Glinting Pyrestone.

Until Tier 6: Shadowmaster's Boots

Phase 5 Neck Slot

Best in Slot Options:

Hard Khorium Choker (Jewelcrafting, pattern from Sunwell)

Used in most cases outside of full BiS with Thori'dal.

Gem with Smooth Lionseye.

Clutch of Demise (Brutallus, Sunwell Plateau)

Best with Thori'dal equipped.

Phase 5 Ring Slots

Best in Slot:

Band of Ruinous Delight (Grand Warlock Alythess, Sunwell Plateau)

Hard Khorium Band (Jewelcrafting, pattern from Sunwell)

Good Alternatives:

  • Angelista's Revenge (60 Badges), Only 1 agility difference from Signet of Primal Wrath.
  • Signet of Primal Wrath (Zul'Aman), Worth using if you need armor penetration early.

9% Alternative:

  • Stormrage Signet Ring (Black Temple)

Phase 5 Trinket Slots

With Thori'dal:

  • Berserker's Call
  • Blackened Naaru Sliver (M'uru, Sunwell Plateau)

Without Thori'dal:

  • Dragonspine Trophy
  • Blackened Naaru Sliver

Hit Alternative: Madness of the Betrayer

Phase 5 Weapons

Main Hand

Best in Slot: Hand of the Deceiver

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

Sought after by Fury Warriors, Enhancement Shamans, and Rogues. Never expect this over them; taking it isn't advisable.

Gem with 2x Smooth Lionseye.

Best Alternative: Crux of the Apocalypse

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

Should be relatively free pickup; using this in both hands is close to BiS.

Gem with Delicate Crimson Spinel.

Other Options:

  • Vanir's Right Fist of Brutality (105 Badges)
  • Shiv of Exsanguination (Grand Warlock Alythess, Sunwell Plateau)
  • Dagger of Bad Mojo (Zul'Aman)

Off Hand

Best in Slot: Crux of the Apocalypse

No other classes should want this dagger; free pickup for Beast Mastery Hunters.

Best for 9%: Grip of Mannoroth

Source: Grand Warlock Alythess (Sunwell Plateau)

May be wanted by other classes; should go to melee first.

Alternative Options:

  • Vanir's Left Fist of Brutality (45 Badges)
  • Shiv of Exsanguination
  • Dagger of Bad Mojo
  • Fang of Kalecgos (Kalecgos, Sunwell Plateau)
  • Mounting Vengeance (Sunwell trash)

Two-Handed

Best in Slot: Shivering Felspine

Source: Trash mobs (Sunwell Plateau)

Recommended route for Phase 5 as it's extremely easy to obtain compared to 1H options.

Gem with Smooth Lionseye.

Best Survivability: Apolyon, the Soul-Render

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

Slight DPS loss but 75 stamina significantly helps survivability in Sunwell. Don't take over Arms Warriors or Retribution Paladins.

Phase 5 Ranged Weapon

Best in Slot: Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury

Source: Kil'jaeden (Sunwell Plateau)

The legendary bow; absolute BiS by a massive margin (200-285 DPS gain).

Best Alternative: Golden Bow of Quel'Thalas

Source: Grand Warlock Alythess (Sunwell Plateau)

What most Hunters will realistically use; still a decent upgrade over Phase 3/4 bows.

Phase 5 Badge of Justice Options

Phase 5 adds many new Badge items, though most are catch-up gear:

Priority Items:

Crossbow of Relentless Strikes (150 Badges)

Good option if you're stuck with Phase 1/2 bows.

Angelista's Revenge (60 Badges)

1 agility upgrade from Signet of Primal Wrath.

Gem Purchases

You can now purchase gems with Badges, easing the gold cost of Crimson Spinels.

Final Recommendations

Melee Weaving Recommendation

Throughout this guide, both dual-wield and two-handed options have been provided. If you're unsure whether to melee weave:

  • Practice with cheaper dungeon weapons first.
  • Evaluate whether you enjoy the playstyle.
  • Consider fight mechanics that may make weaving difficult.
  • Only invest in expensive crafted weapons after confirming you'll use the technique.

Hit Rating Management

Hit rating stays a constant challenge throughout TBC. Keep alternative gear pieces for swapping between 6% and 9% requirements based on raid composition. Major hit sources include:

  • Cursed Vision of Sargeras (Phase 3+)
  • Insidious Bands (Phase 3+)
  • Tier 6 pieces from Sunwell (Phase 5)
  • Various ring, trinket, and weapon options throughout progression

Final Thoughts

Beast Mastery Hunter gearing in TBC Classic revolves around maintaining set bonuses while maximizing raw stats. The transitions between Beast Lord, Rift Stalker, and Gronnstalker sets require careful planning, and contested items mean realistic gear sets often differ from theoretical BiS.

Focus on acquiring the items that benefit Hunters most (Cursed Vision of Sargeras, Dragonspine Trophy, Thori'dal) while being realistic about competition for shared items. With proper planning and patience, you can build your Hunter for every phase of The Burning Crusade Classic.
